How to create a sustainable wardrobe

Here at Timpanys we are "powered by a passion to slow down the production of fashion. We encourage our clients to invest in pieces that will stand the test of time." "Whether it is by extending the lifecycle of your items through buying and selling or purchasing true investment pieces that will appreciate over time. We are advocates of slow fashion and encourage you to join our movement." So here are some of our tips on how to create a sustainable wardrobe.
Creating a sustainable wardrobe from scratch isn't something that is going to happen over night so our first tip is to take things slow. There is no need to throw out all your New Look or Topshop purchases right away (in fact that will only harm the environment further.) If you have already bought these items then make the most of them - wear them and love them! And, then when you are done with them instead of tossing them in the bin, take them to your local charity shop. Remember, "one man's trash is another man's treasure." In doing this you are keeping used clothes out of the waste stream meaning there is less need for new landfills.
Now, I know if you've spent hundreds of pounds on that gorgeous Valentino dress that no longer fits it can be hard to part ways and take it to the charity shop, which is why we are here to help! Sell your second-hand luxury designer items with us to make saying goodbye to your garments that bit easier. We take out all the hassle of selling whilst making you some money back on your items.
Another important tip when building a sustainable wardrobe is to check the working conditions of your favourite brands. You can usually find this information under the "about" pages of their website to see what they are doing to improve the labour conditions for the workers who make the clothes.
Choosing eco-friendly materials is another key way to keep your wardrobe sustainable as one of the largest determining factors of the environmental impact of the clothing industry is the production of chemicals. Next time you are shopping have a look at the clothing label and try to choose natural materials that will biodegrade such as organic cotton, wool and linen.
When it comes to building your eco-friendly wardrobe, less is more! Aim to fill your closet with classic staples that will stand the test of time. Instead of buying lots of cheap clothing that will fall apart after a week, invest in one beautiful item that you can wear for years to come.
And finally, if you want to save the environment and your wallet then buying pre-loved has got to be the best option. By shopping second hand, no new materials need to be produced, you are keeping clothes out of the waste stream and best of all, pre-loved items are cheaper! Here at Timpanys, we are often selling brand new clothes (still with their tags attached) at a fraction of the price. Pre-loved designer clothing not only helps the environment, but it also democratises luxury fashion, making it more accessible and affordable to wear designer clothes.
